Entry Regulations & Travel Restrictions

Unrestricted Entry to Germany is possible for people from:

  • EU member states
  • States associated with Schengen: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein
  • Other countries from which entry is possible due to the epidemiological situation assessment by the EU. (Israel is currently not one of those countries)

Residents of other non-EU countries (if not included above or in the list of 'other countries') are only permitted to enter Germany if they serve in an important role or if they have an urgent need to travel (please see "What constitutes an urgent need for travel?") or if they are fully vaccinated (please see “What rules apply for fully vaccinated people?”).

Special conditions apply to entry into Germany by family members. Please find more information concerning this topic here.

As of 1 August 2021 there is an updated nationwide regulation ordinance in place for persons entering Germany in connection with coronavirus SARS-CoV2/COVID-19.

  • Persons from the age of 12 must be in possession of proof of vaccination or recovery from COVID-19 and a negative test certificate when crossing the border.
  • If you have spent time in high-risk areas or areas of variants of concern, please note the obligation to register (https://einreiseanmeldung.de) and to quarantine (in principle, please click here for exemptions).

As of 23 December 2021 the following updated nationwide regulation ordinance applies for children

  • Persons from the age of 6 must be in possession of proof of vaccination or recovery from COVID-19 or a negative test certificate when crossing the border.

Economic Development

Many countries – including Germany – remain firmly in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic. So far, however, the German economy has proved to be fairly resilient. Industrial production in particular is on an upward trajectory. In stark contrast to the situation last spring, international supply chains have remained largely intact and demand for goods from Germany is rising as the global economy continues its recovery. The economic situation in consumer-related services, on the other hand, remains tense.

The German Council of Economic Experts (GCEE) expects further recovery in the summer:

  • Germany’s gross domestic product (GDP) is set to rise by 3.1 % in 2021.
  • The economy is likely to return to its pre-crisis level at the turn of the year 2021/2022. The GCEE expects the economy to grow by 4.0 % in 2022.
  • The greatest risk going forward is posed by further developments in the coronavirus pandemic. Progress on vaccinations will be one of the key factors determining how swiftly the economy can normalise.
